How do I calculate my grade?
The following criteria will determine a student's grade each semester:
To calculate your grade, do the following:
- 10% - Enrichment
- 10% - Classwork and Homework
- 40% - Content Knowledge (primarily demonstrated via exams)
- 40% - Critical Thinking (primarily demonstrated via projects and labs)
To calculate your grade, do the following:
- Determine your average score in each of the four categories above. To determine your average score, add up your total points in each category and divide it by the total possible points for each category. This will result in a decimal like .90 which is 90%.
- Multiply your decimal score in each category by 100 so that you end up with a whole number (.90 would become 90)
- Multiply your whole number score for your Content Knowledge grade by 4 and your whole number score for your Critical Thinking grade by 4.
- Add your whole number score for all four categories together (using the values you calculated in step 3 for your Content Knowledge and Critical Thinking scores) and then divide this total by 1000 (see example below). This is your percentage in the course. Use the chart below to determine your grade:
Grading Scale
90% and above = A
86% to 89% = B+
80% to 85% = B
76% to 79% = C+
70% to 75% = C
66% to 69% = D+
60% to 65% = D
Less than 60% = F
90% and above = A
86% to 89% = B+
80% to 85% = B
76% to 79% = C+
70% to 75% = C
66% to 69% = D+
60% to 65% = D
Less than 60% = F
EXAMPLE
- Enrichment Score (Enrich): 25 (this student only earned half of the required 50 points for the semester or 25/50) = .5 or 50%
- Classwork and Homework (HW): 10/10, 10/10, 0/10, 0/10, 10/10, 0/10
(this student only did half of the assignments for a total of 30 out of 60 points, or 30/60) = .5 or 50% - Content Knowledge (CK): Exam 1 = 80/100, Exam 2 = 50/100, Exam 3 = 70/100
(this student earned a B on the first exam, failed the second exam, and earned a C on the third exam for a total of 200 points out of a possible 300 or 200/300) = .666 or 67% - Critical Thinking (CT): Lab 1 = 90/100, Project 1 = 90/100, Lab 2 = 80/100, Project 2 = 70/100
(this student earned a total of 330 points out of a possible 400 for this section or 330/400) = .825 or 83% - To determine the students final grade:
Enrich + HW + (CK x 4) + (CT x 4) = 50 + 50 + (67 x 4) + (83 x 4) = 700 out of a possible 1000 (or 700/1000) = .70 or 70% (this is a C) - Had this student come in at lunch for tutoring and retesting to bring up his/her second test grade from a 50% to a 90%, the student would have increased his grade to a 75%. If he/she had also completed ALL 50 points of Enrichment for the semester his/her grade would have been 80% or a B in the course. If he/she had done the extra 50 points of extra credit enrichment, he/she could have improved the grade to a 90%, an A in the course. THE ENRICHMENT IS REALLY HELPFUL SO DON'T PROCRASTINATE AND DO IT AND ALL OF THE EXTRA CREDIT POINTS AS WELL.
