I am passionate about STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math) and have more than 15 years of experience working as a science educator and consultant. In addition, I have served in several leadership positions volunteering for multiple organizations dedicated to enhancing STEM education and career development opportunities for youth in Ventura County.
I am excited about the technological revolution that is reshaping how people learn. I am eager to be a part of this revolution, and want to be at the forefront of helping to develop new technologies that contribute to a redesign of our education system and provide learning opportunities to help every individual meet their full potential.
I started teaching science as a volunteer in my son's elementary school while working as a technical writer and ISO 9000 manager. Then, in 2001, I quite my job in the private sector and started my career as a professional educator teaching middle school and high school in Oxnard while continuing to volunteer for elementary schools. I have led several schools in aligning their curriculum to the state science standards and in creating benchmark assessments. I helped lead Renaissance High School of Santa Paula to a six-year WASC accreditation in 2005-06 and served as Santa Paula High School District's CPM coordinator in 2006-07. In 2009 I completed my masters degrees in biotechnology (MS) and business (MBA), I completed the requirements for my administrative services credential in 2014, and in 2015 I completed the coursework to earn my secondary (K-8) teaching credential. I have also taught courses in biology and microbiology at Oxnard College; so I am proud to share that I am a K-college educator!
My focus as an educator has been on teaching students to be life-longer learners and problem solvers so that they may be successful in college and their future careers. This includes, most importantly, teaching them how to teach themselves! However, I have also emphasized development of technical reading and writing skills, professionalism, and critical thinking skills. Perhaps the most important thing I have hoped my students would take away from their experiences with me is a realization that their education is their own responsibility - the more they invest in their courses, the more they will get out of them. It's up to them to make the very best of their time in school!
I currently serve as president on the board of Gold Coast Science Network (GCSN) helping to coordinate conferences and additional events in Ventura County in support of STEM education. In this role, I remain active with the California Science Teachers Association (CSTA) to help advocate for STEM education throughout California, as well as the VC STEM Network, a newly formed and nationally recognized initiative to support STEM education in Ventura County through networking and partnerships between the education and industry sectors.
